It's a Story..... The Kite looks great but I am gifting it to my cousin so I have not taken it out of the package.
The Backstory,
When I was about 5 years old my cousin would have been about 8 years old. It was Easter, and my cousin had received a Kite for Easter. Those days a Kite was a Paper and Balsa wood affair in the traditional shape [ Diamond Style] with assembly required. An involved assembly procedure I think.
At the time we were living in a couple of different houses on my grandparents farm. Think wide open acreage with lots of cleared land fields for Kite flying.
Anyway Easter Morning the Kite was assembled by my Uncle I think, my cousins father.. The first time I saw it was in the field with all my other cousins outside....
Maiden voyage of the Kite, my cousin asks me to hold it, while explaining she is going to let out a bunch of the string that would support it to fly. My Cousin said, "I will let out a bunch of string and then I will run and tell you when to let go." She let out the string, let out some slack, and took off running, she hollered LET GO !......
I didn't, the balsa wood at the cross brace shattered within my hand and the Kite disintegrated crashing to the ground destroying it. I dont really remember the aftermath but the kite never flew.
We have talked about this event every time we get together, which is not often due to the distance between us and of course life in general.
My cousin is now nearing 70 years of age with children and grandchildren of her own and I decided after a recent visit I owe her a KITE, thus my purchase. I plan to send it out to her for Christmas.
I expect it to be a humorous surprise, and one that she can potentially enjoy with her grandkids.
I am not sure that this will be the end of the story as I am sure there will be more to tell, once the kite is received, and of the potential for further tales of the grandkids and their FLIGHTS.
Thanks for the follow up and I hope you enjoy the story. REAL LIFE , Karl
